I am pleased to release version 1.0 alpha 1 of the proposed official fullscreen ipdf patch!

Please try it out and let me know what you think! I would appreciate (and encourage) extensive testing. Any bug reports will be GREATLY appreciated.

This release is based on the official iRex ipdf viewer v2.11, so it retains all of that viewer's functionality.

Files you can download:

iPDF_Fullscreen_1.0alpha1-installer.zip - Installer for the executable. I borrowed the community ipdf installer and modified it slightly. You can use this to easily install/uninstall this software. (Thanks to daudi for suggesting this.)

fullscreen-1.0a1.zip - A zipfile containing all of the following files:
  • ipdf-1.0a1 - Binary executable, a drop-in replacement for the official iRex ipdf. Compiled for firmware v2.11.
  • fullscreen-1.0a1-svn25.patch - This patch can be applied to official source code svn 25 to add the fullscreen functionality.
  • fullscreen-1.0a1-svn25.tar.bz2 - A tarball containing the svn 25 source code with the fullscreen patch applied.

I have a couple of comments to make, since this is an alpha version and it is not done yet.
  1. Toolbar functionality has not yet been added. To enter fullscreen mode, use a long press of the up arrow. To exit fullscreen mode, use a short press of the "escape" button. Pressing the "escape" button when NOT in fullscreen mode will exit the pdf viewer, as usual. I need the extra toolbar icon information from iRex before I can add icon functionality.
  2. Auto-zoom should work. This means that if you zoom, then your zoom box will be used to intelligently re-zoom when you toggle fullscreen mode. The current zoom box is saved when you close the document. "Special" zooms (i.e. fit-to-page) should auto-zoom properly when you toggle fullscreen mode.
  3. I intend to make several cosmetic changes to my code which will not affect functionality at all, but which will make it conform better to the current code conventions.

Thanks! I've just installed it and will let you know if I have any problems. BTW, someone a little while back made a nice installer for the alternative ipdf viewer (but I'm afraid I can't remember who it was). I used that and edited it to update it for this version of the iliad software so that I can easily switch back and forth between this and the irex version.

Thanks, daudi, I took the community ipdf installer and modified it for this. The link is posted above...

I've asked our graphical artist for such an icon, but he's got a busy schedule. I hope to get it soon.

Thanks for this. Does this contain the bookmarks functionality?
There are quite a few versions of IPDF out there at the moment!

Thanks, Mathhijs! Sounds good.

Hi, emkay! This is exactly the same ipdf that is currently released from iRex with 2.11. It just has a fullscreen mode added. Yeah, I've been thinking I should try to consolidate all of the current ipdfs into one, but I don't have the time these days... Sad

Works great!

Just one thing: If you are in full-screen mode and press the up-arrow again for long time, then the LED is constantly flashing.

It's not crashing, just flashing (what a rhyme Smile )

Oh, yes, I noticed that, but thanks for pointing it out. I'll have to fix that next revision. Simple fix, just add a line of code in the right place.

Thanks!

I must be doing something wrong but I'm unable to install this interesting addition to Iliad. I've already downloaded the code that allows me to have shell access and I have even installed one app via shell: FBReader.

What I do to install the ipdf reader that jharker made available is to copy the folder that you optain when you unzip his file directly to the CF Card. When I turn on my Iliad, I see an icon that says "install fullscreen PDF version 1.0 alpha". I click it (and click it, and click it, and...) but nothing happens. The program won't install.

Several people in this forum say that they have managed to install it and test it. What did you guys do differently from what I did? Am I not installing this properly? This is what I did to install the FBReader and everything worked out all right.

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Try these installers. Unzip to internal memory or USB, CF, whatever, then select the version of ipdf that you want. These variations are being rolled into a single super-ipdf that should be available soon. After you have installed one of these versions of ipdf you won't get a message that anything has been done. You'll have to just try it to see if it has worked (there's no reason it should not).

Hi Daudi,

Thank you so much for your prompt response. I did exactly what you suggest. Actually, I should say I did it again because that's what I had done before. In fact, I had already downloaded and tried to install your installers before. To no avail. Same problem as with all the ipdf installers I have tried so far. I'm assuming my version of iLiad is 2.11 since I just bought it and when I connect via IDS, it tells me that there is nothing to download. So I'm guessing I have the last upgrade.

How do I know the app has not been installed? Well, first, when I click on the notice that says "install fullscreen ipdf" (or something like that), the upper left corner light goes on and it looks like it's doing something but afterwards the notice doesn't go away or changes to "uninstall fullscreen ipdf" as in other cases when an installation has been successful. I still have the notice that says "install full screen ipdf".

I also note that when I open pdf documents by clicking on them nothing has changed in the interface. I don't notice any difference whatsoever with respect to the pdf viewer that came with the iLiad by default. This time I installed 'fullscreen' from your installer. Nothing has changed as far as I can see. I cannot get any full screen. I can just zoom the same (not too comfortable) way I used to when I first used the iLiad pdf viewer. I assume this is the only way to use ipdf (by clicking on a document) since no ipdf application appears inside the 'programs' folder (as does, for instance, the FBReader).

Also, I have looked inside the folders in my CF Card (which is where I'm installing everything) and I don't see any trace of any program having been installed. I have a folder called _local which was created when I installed FBReader, inside the 'bin' subdirectory I find the file 'FBReader' but the file 'ipdf' is nowhere to be found. Not in 'bin' nor in any of the other subdirectories under '_local'. The other folder created when I installed 'FBReader' is called 'Programs'. Again, in there I find folders and files related to the FBReader but nothing related to the ipdf reader.

That's why I'm concluding that ipdf has not been installed. What should I be looking for to confirm that the modified version of the ipdf viewer has indeed been installed?

Anyway, I want to thank you once again, Daudi, for helping me because this is getting to be a little frustrating for me. I need to start doing some serious reading of pdfs and features like automatic zoom in fullscreen or a more comfortable way to read 2 column documents were something that I was really looking forward to having.

Josep M.
