Im am not a developper, but it would be very very cool if it would be possible to build better contentlister etc.
A lot of people use iLiad for sientific research, this must be better supported.

Good point. I've developed in both Java and C/C++. Java is much more productive due to huge consistent API, greater testability and garbage collection. |

First of all, I would like to thank everybody for their response and feedback so far, and would like to ask if any of you would be interested to take a more active role in this project ?
If so, drop me a line at karel.byloos@irextechnologies.com with as subject: Open Community Development. |

To be honest I think this requires someone from iRex to set this up and show the initiative. After all we are going to be increasing your value proposition for free.
What we need has already been mentioned and I know some of this is already available but it needs to be consolidated. Besides some of the questions we will not even be able to answer such as how does what we do get into the main distribution. Should we just work on stuff we want or do we need to implement certain features in a more coherent fashion to ensure a constant future interface. I really don't want this to turn into a Linux scenario where everybody goes off and does their own version and we end up with a hundred different distros. There are simply not enough developers (or even users) for that.
We need servers for an svn repo consisting of the main sources and a bug tracking/planning tool for starters. We need a wiki which will first and foremost contain a getting started guide for new developers (such as myself - new on the iLiad that is) but can also contain some discussions of features which can later be modified and turned into documentation. And obviously we need a roadmap. There are some short term fixes/features that need to be solved/implemented (searching PDFs for example) and some longer term goals (redesign of contentlister) but we need to know how far we can go on this and if you have any design goals of your own.
That enough to keep you going? |

Hello All,
Thanks for your positive feedback - I got a handful of emails and I wanted to let everybody know that I am in direct contact with Adam B. - and I am happy that he volunteered to take the lead in this. From the iRex side I will participate and support the initiative.
Based on your feedback, we will setup the first web applications (like a wiki, forum, etc ...) that are needed and hope to see all of you there soon to continue the discussion and the project.
Thanks again everybody. |

That's the plan. |
Gosh, I wish I knew what you guys were on about!
See, this is why you need an idiot in the development team -- to make sure everything's idiot-proof |
